The Astrology of May 2013 High Voltage Politics Disclaimer

By now, after years of continuous intense astrological activity, every area of our lives is supercharged with transformative and disruptive energies.

Each month seems to initiate processes that will take years to completely unfold; strata upon strata of transformative processes are unfolding simultaneously, each person and each nation responding according to their nature, adding to the appearance of chaos.

It's as if the transformative process has encompassed every area and facet of our lives.

Everything is in transformative motion at once.

As a result, there is turbulence everywhere we look and it masks the underlying meaning and direction of events.

The main focus of events in any given month can be completely obscured by the overall turbulence.

I will continue to focus on the chief astrological narrative line, but acknowledge that it might be hard to discern that line in what is becoming the chaos of contemporary global events.

On the other hand, these charts remind us that the world is not descending into chaos.

There is a fundamental, underlying pattern in world events and they have a direction.

Recap of April 2013

In April, a major stellium in the 6th house brought a release of difficult energies in the workplace and wherever people exchange goods and services for cash.

Early in April, labor issues were in the foreground. Fast Food workers in the New York area carried out an unusual and courageous strike for higher pay. Several hundred service workers struck in the Chicago area later in April. Obama’s nominee for Labor Secretary came up for consideration.

A Lunar eclipse, the first of three eclipses in April and May, occurred on April 25th. It coincided with a number of violent, catastrophic events. I believe the approach of hard aspects that will be exact in May also helped determine these events.

These violent and tragic events in the third week of April overshadowed April’s overall emphasis on workplace issues. However, at least one of these events, the catastrophic explosion of a fertilizer plant near Waco, TX, was, essentially, a workplace disaster and raised innumerable issues related to worker safety.

On an individual level, if my own experience is any indication, April saw many overdue on-the-job discussions with coworkers.

May’s Astrological Milestones
Let us next consider some of the astrological milestones in May.
  • Mars in Taurus opposite Saturn retrograde in Scorpio, May 1. This is a potentially dangerous aspect adding a volatile, explosive component to the eclipse activity we are seeing along the Taurus/Scorpio axis - the chief financial axis of the Zodiac. This emphasis, overall, suggests major transformative events affecting global finances. I believe the approach of this aspect is partly responsible for the difficult or violent events in late April.
  • Mars in Taurus trines Pluto retrograde in Capricorn on May 5 (GMT). This aspect is essentially supportive, but it will add Mars/Pluto energy to a period already supercharged with explosive Mars/Pluto/Saturn energy. It could make things either worse or better, depending on the situation. Perhaps difficult situations (Mars v. Saturn) will catapult us into more favorable ones (Mars trine Pluto).
  • Solar Eclipse in Taurus, May 10th. Another release of force along the already hyper-stimulated financial axis.
  • Uranus in Aries Squares Pluto retrograde, for the 3rd Time, May 20th GMT. This square is the third in a series of seven extending from June 2012 to March 2017 (the next one is in November).
  • Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius, May 25th. This third eclipse in a series of three, hits the Gemini/Sagittarius axis.  This is the main political axis of the Zodiac. Expect major political and ideological realignments. With the Sun in Gemini in the 3rd, in the sign and house of grassroots politics, expect a further dramatic increase in the level grassroots political activity.
May 2013 - Overview Business as Usual Interrupted
May thrusts us across an important threshold in the transformation being powered by the Uranus/Pluto square (exact seven times from mid-2012 thru spring 2015).
The ongoing debate over what used to be generally accepted, core political and economic assumptions will escalate further. Sweeping political realignments will set the stage for fundamental change.

The Embodiment of Uranus Square Pluto

The key to May’s chart is a set of aspects between Saturn, Pluto, Uranus and Venus. This configuration is especially intense because sign and house cusps line up to within a few degrees, placing all the signs in their natural houses.

Taken as a whole, May’s chart shows a revolutionary spirit, a transformative current, flowing through the entire social structure and permeating all events.

Let’s look at each point in this configuration separately. It’s best not to draw any conclusions until the end.
  • Uranus in Aries in the 1st House squares Pluto retrograde in Capricorn in the 10th. This square indicates an intense, classic clash between individuals and authority.
As before (see June 2012, when it was exact for the first time), the Uranus/Pluto square is imbedded in a larger structure that channels its power into a process of comprehensive social transformation. It will affect all the channels through which power typically flows in society. Revolution will be in the air.

When all is said and done, Uranus in Aries in the 1st House lends the chart a predominantly Aquarian tone.

The Yod Itself

The Uranus/Pluto square is linked to a Yod, made up of Saturn retrograde in Scorpio in the 8th, Pluto retrograde in Capricorn in the 10th, and Venus in Gemini in the 3rd.
  • There is a Saturn/Pluto sextile at the base of the Yod. Saturn and Jupiter retrograde are in mutual reception - by Sign and House. Saturn, the planet of discipline, order and austerity, is in the House of collective resources and power. It sextiles Pluto, the planet of power as such, in the 10th house of administrative or governmental power.
This sextile is the very picture of high-level, wide-ranging, in depth deliberations over fundamental political and economic issues.
  • Venus in Gemini in the 3rd house of community is quincunx Saturn in Scorpio in the 8th.
This indicates a strong inclination, and/or inescapable need, to consider the needs and preferences of communities and local groups during these high-level negotiations.
  • Venus in Gemini in the 3rd house of community is quincunx Pluto in Capricorn in the 10th. This placement is all about the bonds of affection and loyalty that bind political and economic entities together.
This quincunx indicates an inclination to question the loyalties that have allowed gross imbalances of power and wealth to develop in society and a desire to make adjustments.

This Yod will energize tensions between social classes and between all levels of social organization - families, neighborhoods, cities, states, regions, central governments and international alliances. It will also activate tensions between capital and labor, church and state, between the races, and between established citizens and immigrants, and so on.

Yod + Uranus/Pluto Square + . . .

The Yod sets up endless debate over rights, duties and obligations within society. The Uranus/Pluto square disrupts relations between individuals and authority.

Combined, considered apart from the final aspect in the structure, the Uranus/Pluto square and the Yod would produce a chaos of competing, isolated individuals clashing interminably over fundamental questions, unable to achieve consensus. The picture is not a pretty one.

Doubtless we will witness some of this chaos of ideas and emotions. But there is one more aspect in the configuration that changes the entire picture.

Yod + Uranus/Pluto Square + Venus/Uranus Sextile

A sextile between Uranus in Aries in the 1st House of the individual and Venus in Gemini in the 3rd House of community completes the circuit. This final link in the chain of aspects turns a potentially anarchic influence into a transformative one.

Assertive individuals (Uranus in the 1st) join with like-minded members of the community to form coherent politically active groups. (Venus in the 3rd).

Groups then join with other groups, ultimately revitalizing the social power structure. The same would be true in commercial, religious and secular organizations, across the board.

Worldwide Transformation of Societies

The social contract is about to be rewritten, with all the excitement and turmoil such things always entail.

Given present trends, top-down governance, favoring the powerful and the wealthy, will give way to governance in which wealth and power are far more fairly distributed.

Add Two (More) Eclipses and Stir Gently

May’s eclipses tell us that we will cross a political and economic point of no return. The error of our old ways will become painfully obvious enough to spur genuine change. Attitudes will shift even more strongly in favor of immediate social and economic reform. However, as will all the other events we have discussed in recent months, this process will not take place overnight. It will be yet another long-term transformative process among others now unfolding.
